About Alex (the official sounding bio)

Alex Dunne spends her time dreaming up fantastical tales and drinking far too much tea. Her first children's novel, The Book of Secrets, was published by The O'Brien Press in September 2022 and went on to win the Eilís Dillon Award for a First Book at the 2023 KPMG Children's Book Ireland Awards. It was also nominated for the 2023 Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing.  A follow-up novel, The Harp of Power, was published in October 2023. Alex is also a co-founder of Silver Apples Magazine, an online literary journal dedicated to showcasing the best of Irish and international writing. About Alex (the fun one!)

Hi everyone! My name is Alex and I'm an Irish author currently living in Toronto, Canada with my partner Richard. I've been writing since was a child, typing up Babysitter Club fan fiction and a melodramatic WWII "novel" on my mam's typewriter. I've always loved books, which should come as no surprise, and tend to read anything and everything I can get my hands on. Since I was small, I've always had a soft spot for stories with magic and adventure. Some of my favourite books of all time are The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, His Dark Material trilogy by Philip Pullman, and basically anything written by Diana Wynne Jones. When I'm not writing or reading, I'm often found playing D&D with my friends (you can check out our adventures on the "You Should Have Been a Meatshield" podcast), rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the 200th time, cooking delicious meals, attempting to paint or draw, or going on walks and hikes.
